I'm super super behind on this book! I'll answer the questions as soon as I can. Until then, I'm covering the computer screen with my hand!!
I did like it, but also I think that people got a little over-excited about it. Anytime a book parallels a classic so closely I'm a little skeptical about the author, because they had a blueprint for greatness. When I finished, I pretty much wanted to crawl into a hole. The ending was so, so horrible, and depressing, even with Edgar and Almondine recovering their bond and going with his father, it was to terrible. As a mother, I was pretty horrified at Edgar's mother's actions throughout the book, anyway, but I couldn't stop myself from feeling the horror of a mother who has witnessed this entire ending scene and known it was her fault. Ugh. Well-written, interesting, but get out the Zoloft.
[SPOILER ALERT] I'm with you, lady. Almondine is wonderful--that scene where Edgar is crying silently, and she licks Trudy's fact to wake her? Poetry. A cry-in-a-good-way moment. But it just came undone for me when Edgar had to go on the lam. I felt the exact same way at the end. Mayhap I'll check some Shakespeare out of the library. Thanks for helping me do some processing re this book!
I really did enjoy this book. I didn't read any reviews about it and I don't remember Hamlet enough to compare. But I got very emotionally involved and my frustration with Trudy grew as the book moved forward. I was devastated at the end and cried quite a bit.
