Edgar Sawtelle, Question #6: The Dogs' Departure

Where do you think the dogs are heading while the barn burns? Why do they abandon Edgar's mother, and in fact never become involved in the human's drama inside or outside the barn at all?

I was unsure at the end whether the dogs were heading for the town they live in, or the town where they had gone with Edgar. Perhaps they were going to town for help? If that was the case, then I would have to revise my opinion of them as being not too abover average. I think, though, that they had divorced themselves from the farm by that point and had decided to move on on their own. Actually, I thought it was a little cold of an ending where they were concerned, for these dogs who were supposed to be so loyal and well-trained to just trot off into the sunset as their home burned. I thought it would have been more fitting for them to have helped in some way, rather than being like fleeing crows of doom.

Good point. Hadn't thought of that.
