Did Edgar's travels change him? Did they add to or detract from the story?

I didn't really feel that Edgar's travels added to the story. It seemed a little tangental to me. I think the purpose of them was to allow Edgar to grow up a little, and toughen up to the point where he was ready to confront Claude and force his mother to see what was in front of her face.
I thought his travels were a bit overdrawn. Went on for a bit too long. But I thought they were there to demonstrate the growth and the bond between him and his dogs.
