What did you think of The Book Thief? How did you feel while you read it? Who was your favorite character, and why? Are there any passages that have stayed with you?

Other than Liesel, Rudy was my favorite character. His death, and how Liesel finally kissed him, have stayed with me in the weeks since I finished the book. Actually, in the earlier section where his death was foreshadowed, I cried. I couldn't believe that he was going to die.
The other thing that has stayed in my mind's eye is my imagining of what it looked like to Liesel as she emerged from the rubble, with everything smoking and everyone she knew dead. The utter devastation, both materially and emotionally, was so heartbreaking, I will probably remember it always.
I really enjoyed The Book Thief. It did take a little while for me to get into it, but, once I did, I couldn't put it down.
A favorite character is just too hard to pick. They all had strengths and faults that made them so real to me. Of course there is Leisel, but I really loved Hans and Max. Hans was just so good to Leisel, and Max was brave and amazing. Rudy with his devotion and support of Leisel put him at the top of the list too.
Any scene that portrayed the treatment of Jews during the war, and what they had to go through really stuck with me. From Max waiting in that room for his friend, before going to find Hans, to the Death Marches. The Death Marches were the worst. My heart ached when Death would describe the people calling out to him to take them away. When Hans gave one of the Jews bread, I couldn't help but wonder if I would have been brave enough to do something like that back then.
I read that last few chapters while I was at Disneyland and I had to admit that I had to put the book down. I couldn't be at the "happiest place on earth" (YACK) and read such heart wrenching text. I particular the scene where Liesel finds Max marching through town. I cried my eyes out. For sure my Fav character was Liesel, but I adored Hans, such a strong and loving father. She was so, so lucky to have been placed with him.
I circled and underlined text all throughout the book and I am planning on reading it again for the literary masterpiece it is (now that I know the full story) once my heart heals from it.
The colors were so wonderful at capturing a scene and an emotions, as was the snow in the kitchen, the clouds, etc.
This was definitely one of my most favorite reads ever.
