Book Thief Discussion Question #4- Narration
How did having Death as the narrator of the novel change the tone of the story for you? Was it a welcome departure from the normal, or an unsettling intrusion?

I really liked having Death as a narrator. I thought it was a fascinating idea, and I liked how he was so different from how others have imagined him over time. It was funny how he actually addressed that fact at the beginning, too, and how he talked about himself and his perception of his own 'life'. I found it ironic that even Death had a Life.
At first, I wasn't so sure about it. I don't know what it was in the beginning, but it just took a little getting used to. By the middle, I was hooked. Once it ended, I realized that the story couldn't have been told by anyone else. I think only the character of Death could really capture everything that was going on during that time and all the struggles Leisel had to overcome.
I thought it worked perfectly. I agree that Death was the only one who could tell the story as it needed to be told. I loved all the little asides that he did and I actually liked how he prepared us for the bad stuff, even if it still made me sad to read it, it was nice to know what was coming.
Yeah, one of the most interest things about Death being the narrator was that because he was "all-knowing" we got snippets of things to come, as heartbreaking as they were.
I loved this twist and found it fascination to think of in this way, especially as an Agnostic. My mind is still reeling.
