  Serena: A Novel Question #1

What do you think that Serena meant when she said, after her miscarriage, that it was 'like my body knew all along'?

I was really interested in this comment. At first, I thought that I thought she meant that her body knew that the baby was gone, but then Permberton thought something about how he wasn't even going to ask what she meant by that. I was also thinking about the baby, and how it was described as being just a mass of nothingness, almost, and how it was kind of a metaphor for what was inside Serena - vile death and destruction. I was wondering if maybe that's what she meant about her body knowing all along; they she knew that all that was in her was destruction, not creation.

I found that comment perplexing too. Since they never really focused much on her pregnancy. But maybe that is the point. She didn't live like she was pregnant. Maybe she didn't feel pregnant. I wonder if her heart was actually in it. I imagine she only wanted to have a child to distract Pemberton from his child with Rachel.
